Bible Reading

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

John 14:1-7

Jesus had just washed the disciples’ feet, predicted his betrayal, and foretold Peter’s denial. The disciples were left discouraged. He was going away and would die, Judas was a traitor, Peter would deny Jesus 3 times, Satan was against all of them, and the disciples would fall away. This is where we find Jesus speaking to them in John 14, a message of comfort and encouragement, pointing them back to the Father, who sent Him.

Lord, help me to remove the distractions that are in the way of me spending time with you right now. I ask that you would meet me in this moment and speak clearly to me through Your Word, as we study what it is to be a person of truth and equipped with the belt of truth. Help me to become more like you today.

Questions from today’s reading:

  • How are we able to find relief from a troubled or sorrowful heart?
  • What hope do we have in Jesus leaving this world? (see verse 3)
  • What is the way Jesus gave? (See verses 5-6)
  • How is it possible to know the Father?

Applications from today’s reading:

  • The disciples were greatly discouraged by all that Jesus had recently told them.
    • We too will be discouraged in life, but trust in God and Jesus will bring relief to our hearts, even when we do not understand.
  • Jesus told us that He is the way, the truth, and the life.
    • In Him, we find the way to truth, and in truth is a freedom to life.
  • Ask God to reveal to you where in your life you have sought truth outside of Jesus.
    • Confess what He reveals and ask for wisdom and discipline to remove it.
  • If we want the way to life, it begins with the truth that Jesus is the only way.
    • Remember, truth is our integrity that gives the rest of our lives freedom.

Lord, thank You again for a clear picture of truth through the life of Jesus. In a world where truth is defined as subjective, thank You that we have You as the source of true and ultimate truth. Help me to see where I have tried to find a truth that was not in and through You. Lord, strengthen me to live every day with Jesus at the center of it all, that I may recognize Him as the only way to truth and life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
