Bible Reading

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, m through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

Romans 3:21-26

As we have looked at different passages from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we have talked about how this letter has a theme of the righteousness of God. Our passage of scripture for today comes right at the beginning of Paul’s writing talking about how God’s righteousness is revealed through justification. In the beginning of chapter 3, Paul writes to show how all humans are sinners and in need of Savior and he reiterates this point in verse 23. In our passage today, Paul helps us to see how we are made right with God, and how this acts as our shield in our armor.

Heavenly Father, I come to You today with eyes focused on You. As I study Your Word today, I ask that You would convict me where there is sin in me and show me what in me does not bring honor and glory to You.

Questions from today’s reading:

  • What do we no longer have to keep to be made right with God? Why is this important?
  • How are we now made right with God?
  • Why is it so important that Paul writes that all have sinned?
  • In what way does understanding that we all keep falling short impact the way we view our need for faith?

Applications from today’s reading:

  • God desires that we all share in His glory and splendor, becoming like Christ. But our sin keeps us falling short of sharing in His splendor.
    • For us to grasp the magnitude of being made right with God, we must grasp the ramifications of falling short on our own. We do not earn being made right!
  • The use of the word faith in the armor of God is that which is fully believable. We are protected by a shield that we receive because of a Savior that is worthy and fully believable.
    • This is evidenced by His death and resurrection!
  • We can access our shield of protection by fully believing in Jesus and being made right with Him.
  • Write down 2 flaming arrows from the devil that you are fully believing in Jesus to extinguish right now.

God, I confess that I am a sinner by nature and it keeps me separated from You. Thank You that through faith in You, I can be made right with You and be in a relationship with You. Help me today to rely on faith as my shield, to guard my heart and my soul from the attacks of the enemy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
