Bible Reading

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

Ephesians 2:14-18

In Ephesians, one of Paul’s letters written from prison, Paul encourages the church at Ephesus to remember their first love, Christ, and to remind them that the Jews and Gentiles are one in Christ. At the beginning of chapter 2, Paul wrote to the Ephesians telling them of their new position with Christ, individually. In verse 11, his focus shifts from the new position individually to the new position corporately. Paul was writing specifically about how the Jews & Gentiles are now part of one body, in Christ.

God, help me to see a new level of peace that I can have and walk with a new level of peace, through You. Speak to me through Your Word in a new and fresh way, heavenly Father.

Questions from today’s reading:

  • When Paul writes that Christ has made the two groups one, who is he referring to? (see introduction)
  • What was it that brought the Gentiles near and brought peace? (see verse 13)
  • What was the tool that was used by God to reconcile the two people?
  • Why is it important that God would bring peace to two different people groups, through the blood of Jesus?

Applications from today’s reading:

  • The peace brought by Jesus made it possible for ALL men and women to be in a relationship with God.
  • Part of the fruit of the peace brought by Christ is unity where division is natural.
  • Ask God to show you if there are people that He has called you to be at peace with that you have division with.
    • Because of the peace God brought through Christ, I can be in a relationship with people with whom I may be different or disagree.
    • This is made possible because of our common union with God.
  • The blood of Jesus brings peace where there could be hostility.
    • For us to put on peace, we will share in common union with all who profess Jesus as Lord.
      • We belong to one body!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder from Your Word of the peace that I have with others, through You. Help me to be a person who lives peaceably with everyone, even if I do not agree with everyone. Use me to be a peacemaker where there is no peace, that people may see You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
