Bible Reading

“11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
Romans 6:11-14

As we mentioned yesterday, Paul’s letter to the Romans is all about revealing the righteousness of God. In chapters 6 through 8 of Romans, Paul writes about how God’s righteousness is revealed through sanctification (the process of us becoming more like Christ). Paul begins chapter 6 by writing about our position regarding sin, as believers. We are dead to sin and can no longer live in it. In verses 5-23, Paul writes on 3 attitudes for us to have in the process of sanctification.

God, I am surrendered to You. I ask for You to speak more clearly to me through Your written Word than ever before. I come to You now with an open heart and mind, asking for You to sweep through and make me more like You.

Questions from today’s reading:

  • When Paul says “in the same way” what is he referring back to?
  • What is the result of letting sin reign?
  • How are we to offer ourselves to God?
  • Why is sin no longer our master once we come to Christ?

Applications from today’s reading:

  • Our power to bear righteousness is found in the reality of the death of Jesus.
  • Write down 3 ways in which your daily life changes because you are dead to sin through Christ.
  • Because we are dead to sin, the fruit of our life can be acts of righteousness.
    • Remember to bear righteousness means to do what is right and the breastplate of righteousness guards our heart. It is from the inner heart that our actions flow. So being dead to sin removes its power to dwell in our hearts.
  • Ask the Lord to reveal to you where you have given sin false authority because you are dead to sin.
    • Repent of what the Lord shows you.
    • Take time to make a plan of action with an accountability partner on how you can practically walk in freedom from the sin the Lord reveals and begin to walk in grace, living as an instrument of righteousness.
  • Our whole life flows from righteousness guarding our heart.
    • Righteousness is not based on you, it’s placed on you.

God, thank You that I do not have to rely on myself or anything I do for righteousness. My ability to be made righteous is found only in You. Help me to see where I have not given You full authority to not live in sin. Thank You for the reality that I am dead to sin and it has no power in me anymore, you have all authority on heaven and earth. Make me more like You today, in Jesus’ name, amen.
